Every year, around 250 events take place at the Amsterdamse Bos. The forest’s beautiful, robust and intimate ambience provides the perfect setting for family activities, film and photo shoots, corporate outings and weddings as well as theatre, sports and dance events. Check out the Boskalender (Forest's Calendar, in Dutch) for upcoming events the Forest. Below you find a selection of what comes along in a year, to give an impression.
January: Phanos Bosscross and Bosloop
Annual 10.1-kilometre running event through fields, forest and over hills. Not suitable for setting a new personal record, but certainly a challenge. For more information, visit phanosboscross.wordpress.com.
March: Drag Hunt
Drag hunting does not involve the hunting of animals. In drag hunts the hounds pursue a pre-laid trail of scent and the riders follow while overcoming obstacles along the way. The sight is spectacular. For more information, visit jachtverenigingsoestdijk.nl.
April: Formula Future
Spectacular speedboat racing event on the Bosbaan lake. For more information, visit powerboatholland.nl.
April: Cherry Blossom Festival
Every year, Japanese expats from the Amsterdam area celebrate the coming of spring when the 400 trees in the Bloesempark are in bloom.
April: Combined Driving Competition
This equestrian sport has three phases – dressage, obstacle cone driving and cross-country marathon – during which the capacity of the riders to master their horses is assessed. For more information, visit hoofdstadaanspanning.nl.
April: Dachau Remembrance
Annual remembrance of the liberation of Dachau concentration camp on 29 April 1945, held at the National Dachau Monument.
May: Amsterdam Forest Marathon Walk
Annual four-day evening walk of five or ten kilometres, organised by the Aalsmeerse Wandelsport Vereniging. The walk starts at the Amsterdam Forest Visitors’ Centre. For more information, visit awv-aalsmeer.nl.
May: Diynamic Festival
Electronic music to a backdrop of the trees. For more info, visit diynamicfestival.com.
May: National Youth Hockey Championships (A/B)
National youth hockey championship finals. Head to the Wagener stadium for the best in Dutch youth hockey!
May: 909 Festival
Rolling techno beats, fairytale-like lighting and a magical atmosphere. 909 is an intimate, one-stage techno fest held at Amsterdamse Bos’s Kleine Speelweide from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. For more information, visit 909.nl.
May/June: Amsterdamse Bos Festival
Come and celebrate spring! Enjoy a programme packed with fun and excitement, including an art route, BBQ, frisbee competition, DJs, canoe hunt, lounge tent, green market, wood carving, dog and horse demonstrations, children’s disco and much more.
June: Jazz at the Lake
Open-air waterside festival with surprising live performances by jazz, soul and funk artists. Enjoy the performances from the waterside or from the water.
June: Rough Golf Tournament
The Amsterdamse Bos will be turned into an 18-hole golf course for this tournament. For more information, visit amsterdamsebosgolf.nl.
June: Midsummer Night’s Cross
Running event in the Amsterdam Forest held on the longest Friday of the year. The race starts at the main entrance to the Bos. Distances range from two kilometres (youth race) to 10 English miles (well trained runners).
June: Koninklijke Holland Beker
Rowing regatta on the Bosbaan in which rowers compete for the Holland Beker trophy. For more information, visit hollandbeker.nl.
July to September: open-air theater
Every summer, the Bostheater company offers a new performance at the open-air theatre in the Amsterdamse Bos. For more information, visit bostheater.nl.
July: A Day at the Park
Huge multi-stage dance festival renowned for its impressive line-up of Dutch and international DJs. From 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. on the Land van Bosse festival site. For more information, visit adayatthepark.nl.
July: Electronic Family
In the summer, one big electronic family will gather in the Amsterdamse Bos for a spectacular outdoor trance festival. From 12:00 noon to 11:00 p.m. on the Land van Bosse festival site. For more information, visit electronicfamily.nl.
July: OWW Swimming Competition

August Dekmantel Festival
Three-day techno fest at the Land van Bosse with festival campground. For more information, visit dekmantelfestival.com.
The Ridderspektakel is a touring event for young and old with tough knights on horses, exciting falconry shows and a complete medieval village where you can go back in time and see how knights lived in the Middle Ages. August: World Rowing Championships
For the first time since 1977, Amsterdam is hosting the World Championships at the Bosbaan in the Amsterdam Forest. For more information, visit worldrowing.com.
September: National Canoe Sprint Championships
Short sprint event at the Bosbaan in which the country’s best canoeists compete for the Dutch championship. For more information, visit watersportverbond.nl/kano.
September: Finance Run
Annual 5- and 10-kilometre running event for the financial branche. For more information, visit financerun.nl.
September: Dragon Boat Race
An open canoe with a dragon’s head at the bow with 16 rowers paddling in unison to the beat of a drum is always a special sight. The programme includes 200 and 500-metre races as well as a 2,000-metre race. For more information, visit www.ehdc.nl.
Annual recreational swimming competition in the Bosbaan. Open to anyone aged 12 and over with a swimming diploma. Swim distances are 2,000, 1,000 and 500 metres. For more information, visit bosbaanswim.nl.
October: Nacht van de Nacht
National annual event aimed at raising awareness about light pollution. Exciting activities in the dark for young and old alike are held in the Amsterdamse Bos. For more information, visit nachtvandenacht.nl.
