Become Impact Partner of the Cherry Blossom Park
The Cherry Blossom park is an icon in the Amsterdam Forest. The park was created in 2000, to commemorate 400 years of Japanese-Dutch. It all began in 1992 with a donation of 50 samplings of the Flower Association of Japan. Which eventually resulted in a larger initiative by the Japan Women's Clubs, with a gift of 400 cherry trees.
Soon after the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands and the Honorary Cosul General in Amsterdam Joined the project. The JWC could not have achieved this projecte without the invaluable support of the JCC and the Embassy.
The founders hoped that generations of people in the Netherlands would come to enjoy these cherry trees as a symbol of the relationship. And their wishes have come true. Every spring, some 150,000 visitors come to enjoy the Japanese ornamental cherry trees that transform the park into a sea of soft blossom. The park not only has an iconic appearance but also fulfils an important social role as a place where different cultures meet and a green-pink oasis for visitors.
Restoring the Cherry Blossom Park
The current trees are reaching the end of their natural life cycle. But we do not want the park to vanish with the trees. The Amsterdam Forest wishes to preserve and honour this beautiful symbolic park, which represents the bond between the Netherlands and Japan. Therefore, it has been decided to renew and revitalize the Blossom Park so this connection can continue to flourish.
Since 2025 we are working on the renewal of the Cherry Blossom Park. We have involved the Japan Women's Club, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and the Japanese Embassy at the start of the project to discuss which elements of the Blossom Park are important to preserve and which could be improved in the new design.
In November 2025 a Shinto ritual was held to honour the trees that will be removed and to bless the start of the project. The renewal includes new cherry trees, better water management, more focus on biodiversity and experiencing different seasons in the park. Read more here on the renewal project.
This specific type of tree, the prunus x yedoensis, is a very beautiful, but also very fragile tree. Therefore the trees need a little more extra care and maintenance than the rest of the forest.
Become an Impact Partner
From mid-2026, it will be possible to become an Impact Partner of the Amsterdam Forest. The Impact Partnership for the Cherry Blossom Park is a special variant of this. This programme is designed to ensure the beauty and value of the Cherry Blossom Park while raising awareness about cultural relations and conservation. Impact Partners contribute to the preservation of this special place through this programme.
Contact us at impactpartnerbos@amsterdam.nl for a non-binding discussion or a short presentation on the possibilities. The Amsterdam Forest has a ANBI status, which means that donation are tax-deductible in the Netherlands.
