The history of Cherry Blossom Park
The Cherry Blossom Park is one of the most unique locations in Amsterdam Forest and a lasting symbol of the friendship between Japan and the Netherlands. Officially opened in 2000, the park is home to 400 Japanese flowering cherry trees, planted on the site of a former tree nursery. Every spring, the spectacular Sakura blossom transforms the park into one of the Netherlands' most celebrated natural attractions, welcoming approximately 150,000 visitors each year.
The idea for Cherry Blossom Park was first conceived in 1992 by the Flower Association of Japan and was later embraced by the Japan Women's Club. Together, they sought to create a meaningful gift that would celebrate the 400 year relationship between the two countries and introduce the beauty of Japanese cherry blossom culture to the Netherlands.
Over the past 25 years, Cherry Blossom Park has grown into far more than a collection of cherry trees. It has become a place where nature, culture and international friendship come together. Visitors from the Netherlands, Japan and around the world gather each spring to experience the fleeting beauty of the blossoms; a tradition that reflects the Japanese appreciation of Sakura as a symbol of renewal, hope and the beauty of life's passing seasons.
